Hotel Review: St. Regis Bangkok

The St. Regis was our home base while we were in Bangkok. This is another installment in our Thailand trip report. We stayed here for four nights including our first night when we arrived at 3am. We ended up staying in a regular room the first two nights and then in a suite the other two. And oh, was this hotel impressive!

This is part of a broader trip report and you can find the other installments below:

The entrance lobby was on the ground floor and we were greeted warmly by the night staff. They took our bags and directed us towards the elevators with check-in on the 12th floor. The woman checking us in explained the many benefits. As a Marriott Platinum guest, we chose the breakfast benefit. Since there was no lounge offered, we received drink vouchers for the bar for happy hour and canapes. We took advantage of that one night and were surprised that nearly every drink on the menu was included. She also informed us that no upgrade was available, but if we wanted, they would keep checking and let us know if something became available.

Warm and friendly service everywhere you turned

By the time we got to our room on the 21st floor, our bags had already been delivered and were waiting for us. This was just the start of what we experienced throughout our stay. Everyone was eager to help and the entire operation ran seamlessly. For us, this was very noticeable and I guess is one of the things the St. Regis brand is known for. The room was spacious with a big King size bed, which was incredibly comfortable. The bathroom had an awesome rain shower as well as a full amenity kit. I really do like when hotels provide you little things like Q-tips and mouth wash. Also waiting for us was fruit as a welcome amenity along with a note from the General Manager.

Breakfast was out of this world

After the late night arrival, we didn’t get to breakfast until around 9:30. Since it was a Saturday, it was very crowded, however we were seated right away. Our server explained the buffet, as well as the special items of the day we could order. For the made-to-order items, you provide a card with your table number and order at the bar and dish came directly to your table when ready. This really ensured that everything always was super fresh. Overall I couldn’t even do it justice and have to let the pictures speak for themselves or check my Instagram story on it. We looked forward to the spectacular experience every morning.

Lucky us to get a suite at the end

After just our first night, we received a note from the hotel about the ability to be upgraded to a suite for the last two nights. All we had to do was call down to let them know we would be willing to move rooms and have our bags moved in the evening of the next day. We even had the option for the hotel to pack our bags for us, which we didn’t take them up on. The butler would be moving our bags and after dinner we could pick up our new room keys. It was so seamless that it wasn’t disruptive at all.

This suite was massive. It had two bathrooms, a full dining table and kitchenette. The actual bedroom and bathroom were also huge and was certainly larger than the apartment we used to have in New York City. A fun but useless feature in the bathroom was the ability to raise the shades in the shower. However the view was directly onto another building, so I decided against providing a free show to those people. Otherwise the view from the living area was a lot better overlooking a race track and golf course.

Escape the humidity as much as possible

Each day, we made it a point to make sure to have some pool time. Bangkok is incredibly hot and humid, so it felt great coming back to lounge by the pool. The pool area had a grand and ancient feeling to it. The gym and spa were on the same floor, but didn’t utilize either. The gym however looked impressive, with a Muay Thai/Boxing ring, lots of equipment and could even get a personal trainer if needed.

The little things are what makes this place special

There were a lot of little things that really stood out to us that made this a special experience. Some examples are: slippers are placed on a towel next to your bed when you get in the room. Housekeeping was done twice a day. Whenever you provided your room number they immediately addressed you by name. Complimentary laundry service for up to four pieces per person per day. All-around we had a fantastic experience.

How did we book this?

35,000 Marriott points per night. With points booking, you are not paying any fees or taxes, so the stay was completely free.

Cash costs of the hotel:

The hotel was selling base rooms for around $250 before taxes, so total savings for the room alone was over $1,000.

Thanks to Elli’s Platinum status, we were also able to take advantage of the free breakfast that was the best we’ve probably ever had in terms of variety, unique international dishes, quality and many made to order items.

How did we earn these points?

Marriott is Elli’s hotel chain of choice for work. Most were earned through her extensive work travel and by taking advantage of promotions over the last year.

Summary:

This hotel was heaven for us. We loved the rooms, laundry service, the food and pool. The thing that really stands out though is the service. Everyone we interacted with was so accommodating and helpful and really made  this stay special. I would stay here again in a heartbeat and we loved that it was connected directly to public transportation to get us around in Thailand.
